The Short Answer
Most surgeons clear patients to fly 5-7 days after surgery. By this point, grafts are firmly anchored and won't be dislodged by normal activity. The short flight from Medellín to the US (3.5 hours from Miami) makes this timing very manageable.
Why Wait 5-7 Days?
Graft Security
Newly transplanted grafts need 5-7 days to anchor securely in their recipient sites. After this period, they're essentially "locked in" and won't be dislodged by normal activity.
Scab Healing
The tiny scabs around each graft typically fall off within 7-10 days. Flying before scabs resolve means you may still look visibly "post-op" during travel.
Swelling Subsides
Forehead/eye swelling peaks around days 3-4 and resolves by day 7. Waiting ensures you look more normal during your flight.
Cabin Pressure: Is It a Problem?
Good News: No Significant Risk
Airplane cabin pressure does not affect hair transplant grafts. The pressure change is equivalent to being at about 8,000 feet elevation — well within normal range. Medellín itself sits at 5,000 feet, so you're already acclimated.
Some patients report slightly increased swelling after long flights due to sitting position and cabin dryness, but this is temporary and not harmful to results.
Flight Day Tips
Do
- ✓ Wear a loose, soft hat (protects from bumps)
- ✓ Bring saline spray to keep grafts moist
- ✓ Stay hydrated (cabin air is dry)
- ✓ Request aisle seat for easy movement
- ✓ Travel neck pillow prevents head contact
- ✓ Keep medications in carry-on
Don't
- ✕ Wear tight hats that press on grafts
- ✕ Rest head directly on seat/window
- ✕ Scratch or touch recipient area
- ✕ Skip post-op medication doses
- ✕ Drink alcohol (increases swelling)
- ✕ Stress — grafts are secure by day 7
Medellín Advantage: Short Flights
One major advantage of Medellín over destinations like Turkey: significantly shorter flights home.
- Miami: 3h 15m
- New York: 5h 15m
- Houston: 4h 30m
- Los Angeles: 7-9h (1 stop)
- Miami: 14-16h
- New York: 10-11h
- Houston: 14-17h
- Los Angeles: 15-18h
What If I Need to Fly Earlier?
Emergency Situations
If you absolutely must fly before day 5, discuss with your surgeon. Flying at day 3-4 is possible but not ideal — you'll need to be extra careful and accept slightly higher (though still low) risk of minor graft damage.
Never fly within 48 hours of surgery. Grafts are not yet anchored and swelling will be at its worst.
